In response to the plight of displaced Syrians [and others] in Greece, Serbia, Croatia, Hungary, and Germany, TIME commissioned Sanna Dullaway to colorize these and other iconic images of World War II refugees. The newly vivid photos are doubly so for me: my grandparents were Holocaust survivors who, after being liberated, moved through Europe as refugees before finally arriving on American shores in the late 1940s.
